That new album, ‘Sea Of The Dying Dhow’, is going to bug music critics all year. It will inevitably be tagged with things like post-hardcore, noise-rock and experimental metal, but, while it is all of those things, it is none of them alone. With songs that sound as heavy as crashing waves, as powerful as slow-rolling currents and as light as seaside spray, there is an audible tide of ideas coming in here that means this band never settle for one silly genre name or set of musical standards. And, while there’s even a track called ‘Water’ gluing the album together, there’s much more to this than ocean analogies too. There are nods to lost British gems like Earthtone9 and Miocene as much as to international experimenters like Tool, Botch and Isis. And if this is sounding like a strictly heavy band so far then try the dry, acoustic quiets of ‘Indian 1’ or the album’s prominent Eastern flavours on for size. There is no pinning this down.
